[d e t o x .] - romare bearden project
[poem]
“traveling lands marching eyes,
every word follows me
swirling around
HE always tells me how i am...
making me think i am not
MYSELF
grown from the land and made from
god’s hands
i know MYSELF and i didn’t
expect to love it as much as i do
to DETOX as much as i do”

Luka's Take on Romare Bearden
Artist's Statement: In this piece we were told to focus on a new year's resolution while making a Romare Bearden inspired art technique. For this piece I wanted to focus on self love and appreciation, I also wanted to try and explore different art styles throughout the year as well and hopefully use them more often. In this piece, you will see four people of different body types and shades with the saying, "You can't love anyone else before you love yourself.". I used the beach setting to better represent the bodies without having to place half naked people in a random place. I also figured that the opportunity for different varieties of colors, textures and and representative tactics was large. Here I actually used torn paper for the water, representing softer edges, and cut pieces for the sand; representing rough and harsh edges. I also layered sand onto the top portion of the piece. With this project I feel as if I accomplished a message and used the opportunity to try a different art style and technique. Thus, reaching the goal of the overall meaning and goal of the assignment.

Journey through art
This was a project done in my painting class for a competition. We had to personally define what our journey through art meant. To me I defined it as “my mental health” and used the piece to represent a lot of what goes through my head every day. I used the extreme colors and hard to grasp concepts without explanation to help portray that. I wanted the art to have its one secret meaning to me, but also be able to interpreted in whatever way the viewer perceived it.
Shading practice//cans
This was another project for my drawing class where the main focus was to work on shadows and different values of pencil. We were provided a soda can and we had to over time crush it more and more for each phase of the drawing. Starting with a completely smooth can, to a slightly squeezed can, to squished and squeezed can, and then to a stepped on can.
Contour drawing
here for my drawing class I was assigned to do a contour drawing of at least three people. I chose myself and my two friends. this was a new assignment considering I had to paint it instead of coloring it with color pencil or pencil. This was a good practice and new technique I was able to experience.

Color wheel // Skin tones
Here in my painting class, we had to make a color wheel to keep in our sketch book and practice mixing skin tones with different undertones and different shades. So here I have the full solid wheel and three sections of skin tone shades with three different undertones. (Yellow, blue, red)
Skeletal Anatomy
In my drawing class we have been focusing on anatomy a lot more lately. So as out frost exercise, we examined the human skeleton and drew two different pictures of a different part of the skeleton. I chose the pelvis and shoulder/arm. I used color pencil and charcoal for these pieces.
Family Memory
For my drawing class we were assigned to do a family tradition or memory. I’m not too fond of my family memories and we don’t have any traditions that I felt were worth drawing. So I drew a tradition that I have with my friend adrian. Whenever we are together we usually watch marvel movies and our favorite is the into the spiderverse movie. There is a joke from the movie of which when a bagel hits a man, the sound effect is simply the word “bagel”.

World problems .
this project was one I completed in my painting class. The topic was world problems. I worked together with two other classmates of mine and we decided to focus on identity. The differences between people and how those differences shouldn’t steer us to believe or think any different about a person’s worth. And how in the end, we all are worth the same and all live in the same world. we overall just wanted encourage acceptance within people of people. the original goal was to make an interactive piece but we decided it would be more impactful if it was more of a collage. The piece was made to speak to everyone differently. I wanted to the end it with something that reaches out to multiple groups of people. And I feel as if i achieved that goal.
Hispanic heritage month
For this piece we had to make a piece of work inspired by the holiday “day of the dead.” This was for my drawing class so I used a mixture of color pencil, pen and some glitter and glue. I made a small wooden memorial for a man. The picture grams is made from roughly cut/broken wood and nailed together. I then drew the man as a skeleton instead of his human form as inspiration from the movie Book of Life.
Abstract Painting
For this project I had to take the bottom of a shoe and use it as a reference for the different shadows and highlights of the painting. The ideal goal was to make it seem like an abstract piece of work and not the actual shoe itself. We had to use a monochromatic color scheme and I chose to use the color orange. We added only wire and black to the color we chose and this is how I made the darkest brown tones and lighter peachy tones.

Self Portrait
Description: For this project I was assigned to Make a self portrait type of art. For this assignment I struggled to find a way to express the different traits and interests that I have. Many of the traits and interests of mine were very hard to out into visual form while till making the art piece visually intriguing.
